1993 Philadelphia Phillies Team Signed Batting Helmet. Are you a die-hard Phillies fan? Then why isnt this autographed helmet in your personal collection yet? Stubble scruffed up their chins. Tobacco wads ballooned their cheeks. The’93 Phils had the look of a slow-pitch softball team itching to kick some serious butt. They did kick butt, too, on and off the field. “They lived the life of professional baseball players as fully as it can be done, ” manager Jim Fregosi says. Though they weren’t a photogenic bunch, their mugs were everywhere, on Baseball Today, on the Letterman Show, on Saturday Night Live (Chris Farley made a helluva John Kruk). Even President Clinton quipped about them. A gang of baseball throwbacks, they quickly seduced the hometown fans. By season’s end, they won over the rest of the country, too. America’s Most Wanted Team became America’s Team in a heart-thumping fall classic against Toronto. The’93 Phils drew more spectators than any other Philadelphia franchise in the city’s century-and-a-quarter of professional sports. This team burned the candle at both ends and lit up their city like a firecracker. The 1993 Phillies were led by stars such as Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, and Curt Schilling. The team was often described as “shaggy, ” “unkempt, ” and dirty. ” The previous year, noting the presence of the clean-cut Dale Murphy, Kruk himself described the team as “24 morons and one Mormon. Their character endeared them to fans, and attendance reached a record high the following season. As a play on the legendary 1927 New York Yankees’ Murderers’ Row, the team’s dirty, mullet-wearing look was dubbed Macho Row. To the surprise of their city and the nation, the Phillies powered their way to a 97-65 record and an NL East division title. After finishing in last place the year before, the Phillies took the lead in the NL East on opening day, and never relinquished the lead, as they clinched the division title on September 28 in Pittsburgh. Alas, the 1993 season ended two wins shy of a World Series championship, as Mitch Williams gave up the ill-fated pitch to Joe Carter in Game 6 that has become one of the most famous game winning home runs of all time. The helmet has 24 signatures on it, signed in black permanent sharpie: Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Curt Schilling, Tommy Greene, Danny Jackson, Milt Thompson, Jim Eisenreich, Kim Batiste, Mickey Morandini, Mariano Duncan, Dave Hollins, Pete Incaviglia, Tony Longmire, Todd Pratt, Larry Andersen, Roger Mason, Ben Rivera, Larry Bowa, Mel Roberts (deceased), Mike Ryan, Dennis Menke, John Vukovich (deceased), Johnny Podres (deceased), and Jim Fregosi. This is a very RARE and UNIQUE collector’s item that would take years upon years to attain all of these autographs on one authentic MLB helmet. It is the exact model the players wore in that era. This is actually a switch-hitter’s helmet, as it has two ear protectors (most hitters use a single ear protected helmet). This was chosen so that the helmet can be displayed from either side and still look great. FYI, the white and yellow lights are reflections from the flash and overhead lighting and are not on the helmet. Unfortunately Darren Daulton accidentally smudged his autograph in the process (on the bill). Player autographs on sports equipment (other than balls) such as this are hard to come by. Also, three of the signers have since passed away, making this signed item even more rare, and now impossible to duplicate. All the work is done for you and displayed on this must have Phillies collectible. Dont miss out on this opportunity to own a spectacular piece of Phillies history! Whether you’re a Phillies fan, or just an autograph collector, this helmet will be a cherished part of your collection, and something to pass down from generation to generation!
